Gloria Mae Lewis

Gloria Mae Lewis was born on November 29, 1943, to Lucy and Raleigh Hensley in Clay County, Kentucky. One of many siblings, Gloria spent her childhood surrounded by family in the Kentucky hills. She loved school, excelled in her studies, and carried a lifelong curiosity, strength, and determination with her.

On September 2nd, 1960, Gloria married the love of her life, Floyd Harold Lewis. Their marriage became the foundation of a family built on devotion, laughter, hard work, and a love that their children and grandchildren would witness throughout their lives.

As young newlyweds, Gloria and Floyd moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Gloria took her first job as an elevator girl at the Carew Tower—complete with a cute little uniform and hat. It was one of those details from her younger years that became part of the story of Gloria.

Gloria and Floyd soon welcomed their daughter, Charlotte Gibbs. They purchased a home in Dayton, Kentucky, to remain close to family, and quite a few years later their family grew again with the arrival of their son, Harold Dwayne Lewis. When construction of the new levee brought changes to Dayton, the Lewis family made a new home in Newtown, Ohio.

Some of the family’s happiest memories were made on their annual camping trips to Florida with relatives and friends. Many a tale could be told about those adventures with Marvene and Charles Hensley—and about all the girls riding on sun chairs in the open bed of a truck. Those trips became the kind of family stories that only grow better with every telling.

As the years passed, Gloria and Floyd watched their children grow and begin families of their own. Their son married young, and a few years later Charlotte married and gave them their first grandson, Randall “Randy” Gibbs Jr. They then impatiently waited as Dwayne and his wife, Cherese, prepared to adopt Gloria and Floyd’s only granddaughter, Ashley Nicole. Gloria suffered a severe back injury that eventually forced her into early retirement, but retirement brought another wonderful gift when Charlotte welcomed Floyd Jakob Gibbs. Just a few years later, their youngest grandchild, Jason Ward Lewis, completed the family.

After Floyd was able to retire, Gloria and Floyd returned to their beloved Clay County, Kentucky. Some might say those early retirement years were among the very best. There were pig roasts and fish fries, long four-wheeler rides through the hollers of Oneida, family gatherings, good food, laughter, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by the people they loved.

The family later suffered the heartbreaking loss of their beloved Floyd to complications from cancer. Life changed again as Charlotte faced serious health challenges with multiple sclerosis. After Charlotte and her husband, Randall Gibbs, moved back to Ohio for her health, the family endured another loss with Randall’s passing.

Eventually, Charlotte and Dwayne managed to “drag Granny Glo” back to Ohio, bringing her once again close to the family who adored her.

Gloria Mae Lewis passed away on October 2, 2026, after living with dementia. In her final days, she was surrounded by the people she loved as they gathered together, sharing precious stories and memories from a lifetime that had given them so many.

Gloria’s children want the world to know something very simple and very important: they were raised in a blessed home by two parents who were not only loving, but deeply in love with one another.

Her grandchildren—Randy Gibbs Jr., Ashley Nicole Eads, Floyd Jakob Gibbs, and Jason Ward Lewis—want the world to know something, too:

They had the most wonderful Granny in the world.

They hope that those who knew Gloria will honor her not only by remembering her, but by carrying something of her into the world. Be kind. Care for people. Love your family. Laugh together. Tell the old stories one more time. Take the trip. Gather around the table.

And above all, spread as much care and love in this world as Granny Glo and Grandpa Floyd gave so freely to theirs.

That would be a life well lived.

And Gloria Mae Lewis certainly lived one.
